The Breather #16: The Regulated Life

Hi fellow breather and somanaut,

Lasting transformation and healing often requires lifestyle changes.

At times, uncomfortable ones, unexpected ones.

For me, it took a very big shift. One that I could never have imagined five years ago.

It took falling in love with “the boring life”.

The reality is:

Making our life a little boring on purpose regulates our nervous system.

The destination is the boring “Now” - the place that seems so unsatisfying and painful when we’re in dysregualtion.

Dysregulation seems to makes us feel uncomfortable in our bodies due to the stored energy that causes us to be in high sympathetic (fight/flight) or freeze mode. Both are states of non-safety.

The more we get to access ventral vagal, the more safety and comfort we feel in our body, the more safe we feel in the word and safe to connect to it and others.

As a result, the desire to escape into dramas, peak experiences and bliss states vanishes.

You have come home.

📚 CHECK THIS OUT 📚

Resources I highly recommend you check out:

🌿 Return to the body, befriend emotions and create as you are. I recently had a deep conversation with Kelly from the Wild on Purpose podcast. Definitely check it out. She is also running a cool free workshop to kickstart into spring (I'll be there too).

🫁 What if your BOLT score is less than 15 seconds? If you don't know your BOLT Score, then check out my post here and then do the test. Hint: it has everything to do with your breathing pattern and nervous system health.

📖 Learning about trauma beyond ‘The Body Keeps the Score’ (and why the book is problematic). The book by Bessel van der Kolk is all the hype on the internet these days, but it's always good to question hypes (and why many books on trauma are by white CIS men).

💨 Different emotions show up in different breathing patterns. What we in the breathwork space have known all along, science is slowly catching up to: more emerging literature support a link between breathing, emotion, and cognition.

🎧 The best deep focus music. I tried out all the deep work music apps and playlist, but I can really only focus my brain when writing and creating with this one.

😔 Shame is the motivator behind our toxic behaviors. I recently finished this book on shame and now I want the world to read it. We don't talk about shame enough and yet, it runs all our lives.
